Tutorial time – Fabric Covered Headband

I came across a few plastic headbands hiding in one of my many containers that I had forgotten I had and for the life of me I can’t quite remember what I had planned for them.

And after throwing some more fabric scraps into my stash today a little light bulb went off above my head, fabric covered headbands, what a great idea.

I know my girls sometimes complain about these type of plastic headbands as they have a small comb type of pattern underneath to hold them in your hair so using fabric to cover them would not only stop the headband from hurting their little heads it would pretty them up as well.  And why not add a few embellishments as well.

So here is what I came up with:

fabric headband Collage

These are so easy to make and it uses the same technique as my fabric key chain's (bias tape fold).

Today I am going to show you how to make the fabric cover along with the felt flower embellishment, you will need:

1 x thin plastic headband (you can find these at any discount store usually in a pack of 3)

1 x 4 inch wide x 9.5 inch long fabric strip of your choice

4 x circles of felt (I used a glass to make out the circle)

1 x smaller felt circle to sew the flower to (it’s about the size of a 20 cent piece)

1 x large button (I made a fabric button out of the fabric I used for the cover)

Now to put it all together:

Note: to get the size of the fabric strip I just measured from where the comb starts and finishes inside the headband (see picture below).

Lets make the fabric cover. First we need to hem each end of the fabric so using a zigzag stitch sew  as close  to edge as you can so that when the headband is threaded through it doesn’t catch or pull the top of the seam out.

20130515_142152

I set my stitch length at 3 and the width at 4.  If you do not have a zigzag stitch sew about a 1/4 inch from the edge.

Now to heat up your iron and make a double bias tape fold.  To do this iron your fabric in half with wrong sides together:

Then open the fabric out flat again, fold one side to the centre line you just made and iron it flat, then do this to the other side:

Now you have yourself some double sided bias tape:

All we need to do now is sew a 1/4 inch seam down both sides and then you will be able to thread the headband through it’s new cover:

For the felt flower, fold each circle in half and then in half again and machine or hand sew each one to the smaller circle as pictured, I always hand sew mine:

Using your button, sew the embellishment onto the fabric cover, making sure only to sew on to one side.  You may find it easier to do this while the headband is threaded through.

Miss G is very happy with her new headband but her big sister didn’t want a felt flower, Miss J wanted Mummy’s crochet flowers she found in my crochet stash:

So have fun using up your scraps for this one.  The girls have their eyes on a few more bits out of my stash and that is what’s great about this cover as you can make as many as you like and wear a different one for each day of the week.

Would love to see what you come up with!

Found it at the library – Homemade

I found Homemade, Gorgeous things to make with love by Ros Badger and Elspeth Thompson while at the library picking up the Charlie St. Cloud book the other day and what I liked about this book is it is set up with ideas for you to make by the seasons (summer, autumn, winter, spring).

20130503_133536

There is a project for everyone one to make and not just sewing/crafting kind of projects, it has gardening ideas and lovely goodies to cook like spicy pumpkin soup, golden autumn chutney and Sloe Gin.

This book would be a great addition to anyone’s bookshelf and a great go to book for when you have an itch to do something handmade.

Do you have a book that you go to for ideas?

School Lunch

My girl’s are really enjoying having wraps for their lunch but complained that they fell apart after they took one bite.

After having a little think about it I thought why not wrap them in wax paper just like they do in cafe’s/takeaways.

I had some cheap homebrand wax paper that really isn’t very good for anything and wrapped them up in like a christmas cracker, cut them in half and put them in their sandwich containers.

Just like a bought one Mummy!!!

Do you do anything special for your kids lunches?

Roast Pumpkin Soup

Butternut pumpkins were on special today at Woolworths for 98 cents each and with the weather getting cooler here I thought pumpkin soup for dinner with some crusty bread would be perfect.

IMG_20130502_155321

Also helped that it rained here this afternoon so it is even cooler here this evening.  I also decided to roast the pumpkin first which is something I have never done before and have always wanted to try.

To do this I cut up the pumpkin into small wedges, covered them with a bit of olive oil and then placed them in a preheated oven at 200 degrees for about 30 to 40 mins (until soft).

20130502_171203

You can peel the skin off before hand if you like especially if you are going to eat the soup straight away otherwise if you have time for the pumpkin to cool down the skin peels off very easily.

Sautee some onion and garlic in a large pot then add your pumpkin and enough chicken stock to cover it all.

I let it simmer for about 15 mins then I puree the soup with my hand blender.  If it is too thick just add a little bit more stock.

20130502_174101

Roasting the pumpkin first really does and just that little bit of extra yummy sweetness to the soup.

What is your favourite soup to make in the colder months?

A friend sent me the link to this little movie via email and I just had to share it with you.

It’s just a little bit funny and you need to watch past the credits.

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud

I know this book has been out for quite a few years now but I caught the movie a few weeks ago on Free to air TV late one night while I was waiting for some panadol to kick in and get rid of a horrible headache.

20130501_171926

I didn’t get to see it all but the next day I looked it up on the net to see what it was all about and found out that it was adapted from a book and not just a screenplay.

I love to read and I usually read a chapter of a book before I go to bed but my last 2 book series, The Bourne Identity trilogy (yes I read it as my husband said that they are completely different from the movie which they are and I had just finished the Twilight books) and of course the Fifty Shades of Grey (bought them with a gift voucher from my in-laws for my birthday) by book 3 of the series I was over the storylines and just wanted them to hurry up and get somewhere and they are both still sitting on my bedside table waiting to be finished.

So while the girl’s where at dance classes I took Mr E up to the library to find out if they had a copy and lucky me it was available (our local library is very small and I usually have to request books online to be delivered locally).

Looking forward to reading this one. Have you read the book, what did you think?
